Mary Piper


NORWICH – Mary Grace Piper, 80, of Peacock Apartments and formerly of Fair Street, passed away on Friday, Aug. 10, 2007 in Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
Born Dec. 20, 1926 in Norwich, Mary was the daughter of Dominic and Jennie (Mollica) Famolaro. She graduated from Norwich High School with the Class of 1945 and received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from RIT in 1949. On Aug. 6, 1949, in Norwich, she married Laurence E. Piper, who survives. Mary first worked as a chemist for Eastman Kodak in Rochester and subsequently as a lab chemist in Louisiana. After moving to Norwich in 1951, she worked numerous jobs while raising her two children.
Mary was active with the Girl Scouts, the former Elks Swim Team and the Ladies of the Moose. She also loved to bowl. She was a past president of the Norwich Chapter of AARP. She enjoyed senior citizens dinners and volunteered for 26 years at the Pink Door. Mary and her husband were named Mr. & Mrs. Chenango County during the 1980s.
In addition to her husband, Larry, of Norwich, Mary is survived by her two children and their spouses, Sandra and Paul Christman of Lassellsville, NY and David and Linda Piper of South Berwick, Maine; grandchildren, Tanya LaCross, Aaron Christman, Michael Piper and Kathleen Mosser as well as step-sisters, Anna Thomas and Mary Grace MacDonald. She was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Julia Famolaro and her stepfather, John G. Natoli.
Memorial services for Mary will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Sorrows Chapel in St. Paul’s Cemetery. Burial will follow. There will be no calling hours.
Contributions in Mary’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
