Harry Shoemaker


NORWICH – Harry G. Shoemaker, 83, of Pleasant Street, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2007 at his home.
 Born Feb. 24, 1924 in Tyrone, Pa., Harry was the son of Dr. Edward C. and Virginia (Grazier) Shoemaker.  He spent his early years in Pennsylvania where he graduated from Tyrone High School with the class of 1941.  Harry went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Penn State University in 1948.  During World War II, he served in the Philippines with the US Navy as an Electronics Technicians Mate Second Class.  Moving to Norwich in June of 1955, Harry joined the workforce at GLA (Simmonds Precision) as an electrical engineer retiring in February of 1986.
Harry was an active member of St. Paul’s Church, a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, the Elk’s Lodge and the American Legion.
On Aug. 24, 1968, in St. Paul’s Church, Harry married Catherine Westcott.  Catherine died in July of 2003.  He is survived by fifteen nieces and nephews.  Harry was predeceased by two brothers, William and Edward and two sisters, Suzanne Crain and Joanne Verbinski.
A Mass of Resurrection for Harry will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at St. Paul’s Church. Burial will follow in St. Paul’s Cemetery. Friends are invited to call in the Marian Chapel at St. Paul’s Church from 9:30 until the time of the service.
Contributions in memory of Harry may be made to the Norwich Family YMCA, 68 North Broad St., Norwich, NY  13815.
