Gloria Salak


GUILFORD – Gloria A. Salak, 79, of Guilford, passed away July 2, 2006 at Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich.
She was born Nov. 30, 1926, daughter of Leroy “Duke” Batie and Ola Davis Batie. Gloria lived in Norwich until the age of 7. Then her family moved to Marcy and Gloria attended Whitesboro Schools. Graduating in 1945, she then attended Cortland State Teachers College. In 1951, she moved to Oxford. In May 1963, she married Thomas A. Salak. In 1967, she went back to college and received her degree and certification for teaching English and reading. Upon graduation, she began teaching at Sidney until retiring in 1987. Gloria was an avid golfer and was active in the Tri-Town Theater for many years. She also has many hobbies including riding motorcycle with her husband who survives.
Gloria is also survived by two daughters, Michele Batie of Norwich, Colleen and John Garbor, N.P.R., Fla.; a son, Thomas Salak Jr. and his wife, Cindy, of Bainbridge; three step-daughters, Linda and Ernie Whitacre of Bainbridge, Sheryl and Pete Kondrach of Breesport and Marguerite (Peg) Salak, of Bainbridge along with a faithful friend, “Duffy.”
At the request of Gloria, there will be no church or memorial services. The family will receive friends on Friday from 6 - 8 p.m. at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church Community Room located at the corner of West Main St. and Circle Drive in Sidney.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in her memory may be made to the Delaware Valley Humane Society, 101 Est Main St., Sidney.
