SOUTH NEW BERLIN – Richard J. McCarthy, of South New Berlin, NY, passed away at his home on Sunday, July 29, 2007.
Richard was born on July 10, 1922 in New York City, a son of Richard J. McCarthy and Mary Deasy. On Aug. 9, 1943, he married Rena Gould McCarthy.
He spent his childhood in New York City and Middlefield. He served as 1st Sergeant , Fox Company 1st Division, 2nd Battalion, 7th US Marine Corps in World War II. He was wounded during active duty and received honors for above and beyond the call of duty. Billy Hathorn, noted Navajo Code Talker, was his blood brother. After the war, Richard returned home and was a Rural Mail Carrier for South New Berlin for over 30 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post of South New Berlin for 53 years and the first Baptist Church of South New Berlin. He was also a former member of the South New Berlin School Board of Education.
Besides his loving wife, Rena, of 64 years, he is survived by his children Timothy and Elaine McCarthy of Preston, Michele and Thomas Bryden of South New Berlin, Peter and Sandra McCarthy of Norwich and Lori and Thomas Porter of South Plymouth; one sister, Marie and Walter Lyding of Rochester; one brother Jeremiah and Carol McCarthy of Macadon; grandchildren Debra and John Wanhadalo of Alabaster, Ala., Sherry and Timothy Laughlin of Norwich, Tina and Scott Lindridge of Oxford, Carrie and Michael Meade of South New Berlin, Tanya Miller of Plymouth and Timothy and Jennifer McCarthy of New Berlin along with 13 great-grandchildren.
Richard was predeceased by one brother John Joseph McCarthy and a sister, Anna McCarthy Bogan.
A private family service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Dakin Funeral Home, LP, New Berlin with the Rev. Kenneth Simpson officiating. Interment will be in the Riverside Cemetery, South New Berlin.
Donation in memory of Richard may be made to Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich.
