Charles I. Carpenter


PITTSFIELD – Charles I. Carpenter died June 27, 2007 at Cooperstown New York. He was born in New Berlin November 25, 1941 to Kenneth and Mildred Ellen Crandall Carpenter and spent his childhood in New Berlin. He graduated from New Berlin Central School and attneded SUNY Delhi for one year majoring in Business Managament.
He worked at Procter and Gamble Pharmaceuticals as Director of Medical Relations and retired from the company after 33 years of service. While working there he was in charge of over 100 annual major medical conventions and the production and distribution of all medical teaching and films to doctors and hospitals as an educational service. Charlie was President of the Health Care Exhibitors Association of the United States in 1975 and served for 12 years on the Board of Directors of this 650 company member organization. He worked with serveral of the world’s leading physicians and many of Charlie’s productions won international acclaim.
Charlie came from a musical family and his career began at age four when he sang at the New Berlin Minstrel Shows. He also sang in the New Berlin School Boy’s Quartet and this group sang on local TV stations in Utica and Binghamton. He played the banjo for the “Christy Strummers” and this band traveled the area playing in pubs and churches. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, but most of all time spent on his John Deere.
Charles married Beverly Johnsen in 1961 and they have three children, Robin and Bill Beckwith of New Berlin, Keith and Susan Carpenter of Edmeston, and Brad and Tammy Carpenter of New Berlin. He is also survived by his brother Danny and Diane Carpenter and his sister Sheree and Mike Acre and grandchildren: Nathan and Cady Beckwith, Zachary and Alexis Carpenter, Megan and Holly Carpenter, and Jacob and Brad Jones. Charlie was a devoted husband and father and spent many happy hours with his family.
Charles served as a New Berlin Village Trustee and Deputy Mayor, and also was a member of the Pittsfield Fire Department Board of Commissioners. He belonged to Phoebus Lodge 82 in New Berlin and was elected Mason of the Year in 2007.
The funeral will be Sunday at 7 p.m. at Saint Andrew’s Church, New Berlin, with the Rev. Charles Taylor. His burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery. A reception at the Parish Hall will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pittsfield Emergency Squad or Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church Bell Fund.
