George Youngs


OXFORD – George W. Youngs, 83, of Oxford passed away June 16, 2007 at the New York State Veterans’ Home, Oxford.
He was born on December 5, 1923 in Afton, the son of the late Clarence and Isabella (Hatton) Youngs. On Aug. 23, 1946 in Bainbridge he married Jean Bennett, who passed away on Oct. 15, 2005.
He is survived by his son, Dale Youngs of McDonough; his daughter and son in law, Joanne and Mark Klinge of Springfield, Ore.; his grandchildren, Jeff Lovgren and Tiffany Lovgren; his great grandson, Darin Joe Wilmot; several brothers and sisters and several nieces and nephews. His daughter, Donna Davenport, predeceased him.
George was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the 26th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force and flying 26 missions over Europe in “Sittin Pretty.” He was a life member of Fort Hill Post #376, American Legion of Oxford, where he was a Past Commander and served as Treasurer for many years. He also was the cashier at their Sunday morning breakfasts. He enjoyed playing pitch at the American Legion. He and his wife entertained at several local restaurants playing the organ. He helped the American Cancer Society with the Duck Derby for several years. He enjoyed cooking barbecued chicken and putting on clam bakes. He donated several items to the Warplane Museum in Elmira. He had worked at Keith Clark in Sidney, Norwich Manufacturing, Automecha in Oxford and retired from the Community Work Shop in Norwich. He was also a member of the Oxford Rod and Gun Club and a life member of the NRA. He enjoyed morning coffee at Mr. Chubb’s in Oxford.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Oxford, with the Rev. Patricia Robinson officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Riverview Cemetery, Oxford.
Friends may call at the Behe Funeral Home, Oxford on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the NYS Veterans’ Home.
