Elizabeth Wightman


NORWICH – Elizabeth S. Wightman, 91, of Norwich, passed away Tuesday morning, June 5, 2007 at her home.
Born in Madison on April 10, 1916, the daughter of Elvere and Mattie (Alcott) Weeden, Elizabeth grew up in Sidney and attended the local schools. She and her husband of 73 years. Henry Wightman, were married in Sidney on Sept. 1, 1934, and shortly thereafter relocated to Norwich, where Elizabeth became a dedicated and devoted wife and mother. She took great pride in making her home a comfortable and warm place for her family and friends to enjoy, was an excellent cook and seamstress, and loved her flowers. She was clever with crafts, enjoyed bingo, loved local history and antiques, and looked forward every year to her annual garage sale.
Elizabeth is survived by her husband. Henry Wightman of Norwich; her children: Geraldine Haynes and fiancé John F. Bargher of Guilford, Carol E. Wightman of Norwich, and Robert Wightman and wife Karen of Norwich; her grandchildren: Kenneth L. Haynes and wife Jennifer, Dennis J. Haynes and wife Bonnie, Brett L. Wightman, Brenda Schabel and husband Steve, Alison Locke and husband Calvin, Sarah L. Wightman; and many great and great-great grandchildren. Elizabeth is also survived by her brothers and sister: James Weeden, Ralph Weeden and wife Carol, and Marie Cole and husband Frank, all of Sidney. She was predeceased by her brothers and sisters: Russell and Art Weeden, Mary Anne Zimmer, and Anna Norden.
At Elizabeth’s request, there will be no calling hours. Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of her family from the Godfrey Cemetery of Guilford, with the Rev. Mark Thall of Brookfield, a long-time neighbor and friend of the family, officiating.
Elizabeth’s family has requested that memorial contributions be sent to Hospice and Palliative Care of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815.
Arrangements are by the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home.
