Ruth Hicks


NORWICH – Ruth W. Hicks, 99, of Norwich, passed away early Friday morning, May 25, 2007 in the Residential Health Care Facility of Chenango Memorial Hospital, where she had made her home since 2001.
The daughter of Ralph E. and Maude (Elderkin) Wilson, Ruth was born in Sidney on Jan. 29, 1908. Following her graduation from the Guilford High School, she attended CCBT in Syracuse. Ruth and John Edward Hicks were married in Norwich on Oct. 4, 1930, and Ruth subsequently began her 47 year career as an employee of the NYS Electric and Gas Corporation. She later worked for five years for Valley Video in Norwich. In 1981, she moved to the Chenango Valley Home, where she resided for 20 years. Ruth was a former member of the Norwich Chapter of the Eastern Star and a Past Matron. She belonged to the Past Matrons Association, Norwich Charter, and Past Matrons Association of the Broome Chenango District.
Ruth is survived by her nephew, David Anthony of Angelica; her great nephew, Donald R. Anthony Jr. of Oxford; great nieces Donna Clarke and Peggy Seiler, both of Norwich, as well as several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, John, on June 26, 1962; by her brother, Theodore Wilson, and sisters Margaret Christie and Myrtle Anthony.
Funeral services for Ruth will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Glenn Mahaffey, rector of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the service at 11.
