Michael Squires


NORWICH – Michael Allen Squires, 53, life-long Norwich resident, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2007 in the Louis Stokes VA Medical Center of Cleveland, Ohio.
Born in New Berlin on Oct. 29, 1953, Michael was the son of Percy and Helen (Smith) Squires. He grew up in Norwich where he attended and graduated from the Norwich High School with the class of 1971. Athletically inclined, Michael had been a diver on the Norwich swim team, and loved the outdoors. In the early 1970s, he worked under Warren LaTarte scouting for the West Haven Yankees. From October 1976 through December 1977, Michael served his country in the U.S. Army. He will best be remembered as the cook in the Driftwood Diner which was owned by his parents; and at the Wiz south of Norwich, Ossie’s, and the Ontario Restaurant. Michael was fund of music, especially the Beatles, and liked playing the drums. He adored his grandchildren, and enjoyed eating out. It was in Norwich that he and his wife, Cheryl LaFave Squires, were married.
Michael is survived by his wife, Cheryl Squires of Norwich; by his children: Michael Alien Squires II and wife Jaime of Clifton Park, Jeremy Squires and wife Amy of Norwich, Joshua Squires of Norwich; and step-daughter Shana Jaycox of Norwich. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Caitlyn Squires, Michael Squires III, and Lauren Squires; by his sister Vicki of Ballston Spa; brothers Percy Squires Jr., Kevin Squires, and Jeffrey Squires; his mother-in-law, Agnes Johnson of Norwich, and by nieces and nephews. Michael was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Dale Wood.
Funeral services for Michael will be held at noon on Tuesday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Stephen Reese, pastor of the Columbus Community Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in Riverview Cemetery of Oxford.
Friends are invited to call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until noon.
