John Chomyzak


NORWICH – John G. “Jerry” Chomyszak, 78, of Canasawacta Street, passed away on Friday, May 25, 2007 at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City.
Born June 19, 1928 in Johnson City, Jerry was the son of John and Nora (Gresham) Chomyszak. He was a 1946 graduate of Binghamton Central High School and then entered the United States Army, serving in Japan. He was first employed at Olum’s Furniture in Binghamton before purchasing Norwich Furniture on South Broad Street in the early 1950s. The store moved to American Avenue and when it closed, Jerry remained there, operating his framing business, until his retirement in the late 1990s.
An avid outdoorsman, Jerry was very active in the National Ski Patrol, once serving as Patrol Leader at Labrador Mountain. He also loved boating, hunting and fishing.
Jerry was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church as well as the Elk’s Lodge, the former Moose Club, the VFW and American Legion and his beloved Lost Pond Club.
On May 7, 1960 in the First Methodist Church in Oneonta, Jerry married Marjorie (Stark) Chomyszak who died on Sept. 19, 2006. Jerry is survived by his children and their spouses, John B. and Loretta Chomyszak of Liverpool, Pamela J. Chomyszak of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., F. Brent and Tanya Chomyszak of Liverpool and Jeffrey P. Chomyszak of Norwich; four grandchildren, Michelle Shavalier, Amanda, Callie and Daniel Chomyszak; a great grandson, Gary Shavalier and a brother, Donald Chomyszak and his wife, Linda, of Norwich. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Memorial services for Jerry will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 29 at the Wilson Funeral Home. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 1-3 p.m. and 5 p.m. until the time of the service at 7.
