Elizabeth Lamphere


NORWICH – Dr. Elizabeth V. Lamphere died at the Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich on March 27, 2007.
She was born in Oneonta on Aug. 15 1916, the daughter of Grover C. and Lucy (Reid) Lamphere.
Elizabeth graduated from Oneonta High School and in 1938 received her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Education with minors in Biology and Math from Hartwick College.
Her professional career included Schuyler Lake, Herkimer, Central Valley, Wappingers Falls and Norwich High School, where she taught Chemistry and served as chair of the Science Department.
After receiving her Masters Degree from New York University in 1947, she continued her education in the summers. Elizabeth studied at GE, Shell, The National Science Foundation, Union College, Cornell, Worcester Polytechnic and Bowdoin College.
In addition to her studies, she helped the NY State Education Department write the Chemistry regents and traveled the country doing workshops and conferences on improving methods for teaching science.
Elizabeth received many awards recognizing her achievements in education.  Some of these were from Hartwick College, Norwich Central School and The Science Teachers Association of NYS. 
In April of 1969, The American Chemical Society awarded Miss Lamphere the James Bryant Conant Award. This recognition was for “exceptional success as a teacher of High School Chemistry and outstanding contributions to the advancement of science education.”
She was the co-author of Action Chemistry, a text book which was used throughout the United States and in Western Europe.
In May of 1997, Hartwick College bestowed on Miss Lamphere an honorary Doctor of Sciences Degree in recognition of all the work she did in the field of science and science education.
Dr. Lamphere was an active member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Norwich where she helped to conduct services, taking communion to shut-ins, chairing a program to provide meals for those in need and developing the church library.  She was also a regular contributor to the SPCA.
Elizabeth is survived by a first cousin, Mr. Ted Lindsley of Scottsdale, Ariz. and many second cousins. She was especially close to her second cousin, Brigadier General Dana Lindsley Born, her husband Lt. Col. Timothy Born and their daughters, Hanna, age eight and Heather, age six of Colorado Springs, Colo.
A graveside service for Elizabeth will be held at 11:30 a.m., Thursday in The Oneonta Plains Cemetery.  The Rev. Kenneth Hunter of St. James Episcopal Church in Oneonta will officiate.
