Charlotte Heotis


NORWICH – Charlotte Marie (Mason) Heotis, 85, previously of Sharman Drive, Norwich, passed away Thursday, April 26, 2007 at the Residential Health Care Facility of Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Charlotte earned her bachelor of arts degree from Baker University in 1944. On July 30, 1945, in Kansas City, Mo., she married James Heotis. During World War II, she was chief chemist at Northwestern Metal Company of Lincoln, Neb., and was also a chemist at a cereal factory. She held a patent for a mechanical flask shaker. An avid athlete and outstanding collegiate athlete, particularly in running track, Charlotte was a sports enthusiast. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, canoeing, and camping. She was very involved in her children’s sports; officiating at swimming and track meets and supporting football and dance. Charlotte was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, a past president of the American Association of University Women, and a past member of Eastern Star. She was an active member of the United Church of Christ First Congregational of Norwich.
Charlotte is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Peter Mason Heotis and Peggy Heotis of Miller Place; by her daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Sharman Marie Petersen and Dr. Michael Lynn Petersen of Longmont, Colo.; her sister, Mrs. Jeanne Hughes of Overland Park, Kan,; and her grandchildren, Kathryn (Heotis) Oldenborg and husband Ron of Coram, Laura Heotis of Perth, Australia and Jacquelyn M. Petersen of Longmont, Colo.; by nieces and nephews and their children; and American Field Service daughter Christine DeWitte-Smet and her husband and children.
She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. James Heotis; her sister, Vivian (Mason) Rainwater; and brothers-in-law, Vincent Rainwater and James Hughes.
Funeral services for Charlotte were held at noon on Monday, April 30 from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Joseph Connolly, pastor of the United Church of Christ First Congregational, officiated and offered the committal prayers at the interment in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends paid their respects to the Heotis family on Monday from 10 a.m. until the service at noon.
The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Southern Tier Regional Office, 401 Hayes Ave., Endicott, NY 13760.
