Jack Scranton Sr.


BEAVER DAMS – Jack R. Scranton, Sr., 69, of Beaver Dams, N.Y., passed away Monday, April 23, 2007 at Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, Pa.
Jack was born in Corning on Oct. 15, 1937 to George and Lena (Haxton) Scranton. He married Jeanne Jellison in 1960 and was preceded in death by her in 1997. He served in the Air Force from 1954 to 1958. He was a printer operator for Corning Box Factory and Weyerhauser. Jack had been the Highway Superintendent for the Town of Orange for several years. He drove bus for T & T Bus Company and Covered Wagon Tours. He loved to golf and was a Yankees fan. Jack loved to travel and old time country music, and was a member of the American Legion in Campbell. Jack loved being a Dad to his five children and to the 42 foster children he and his wife took care of all of their married life. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and hunting deer with his sons.
His survivors include a daughter, Sabre Armstrong of Palm Harbor, Fla.; three sons, Jack (Penny) Scranton Jr. of Pine City, Jeff (Debora) Scranton of Monterey, and Jody Scranton of Huntington, Pa.; a sister, Lola (Harry) Sonner of Waneta Lake; one brother, James Scranton of Gang Mills; a grandson he raised, Brian (Liz) Scranton of Monterey; his loving companion, Mary Genung of Oxford; several nieces, Kathy Hodder, Dale Mullaney, Christine Miller, Connie McDonald and Brenda Sampsell along with several nieces and nephews, 42 foster children, eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Jack was predeceased by his daughter Robin Scranton; two brothers, George Jr. and Clifford Scranton; and by his sister, Lillian Mattison.
Jack was well known in the Chenango County area. For the past 10 years, he was the main bus driver for the Chenango County Seniors’ bus tours. He referred to the Chenango Seniors as his other family. They traveled many miles with Jack and Mary.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 7 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 17 W. Pulteney Street, Corning, where funeral service will follow calling hours at 7 p.m. Interment will be in Chapel Knoll Cemetery.
