Harriett Brunig


NORWICH – Harriett M. Brunig, 86, died at home on April 30, 2007.  She was born on Oct. 6, 1920 in LaFargeville, New York, the daughter of Joseph and Ethel Scott. In 1941, she married William Brunig, and they moved to Norwich where they lived for many years on South Broad Street. William Brunig died in 1998.
 She is survived by her five daughters and their husbands:  Kate and Tom Murphy of Skaneateles, Barbara and Roland Thomas of Camillus, Linda and Charlie Hanson of Norwich, Candice and Renwick Russell of Walton, and Elizabeth and Anders Bergfjord of Cooperstown.  Also her grandchildren Christopher and Donald Cima, Holly and Jordan Thomas, Michelle Rickard, Kerry Maroney, Jeffrey and Lisa Russell, and Rebecca, Lon, and Kurt Bergfjord.  She had two great-granddaughters:  Kelly and Sarah Rickard.  Also surviving are three sisters, Verda Corbin of Clayton, Helen Dombrowsky of Liverpool and Nettie Gino of Nipoma, California, and a brother in Los Angeles, Melvin Scott.  She had many nieces and nephews.
 Harriett was an active community volunteer, delivering Meals on Wheels and managing the Pink Door Thrift Shop even after she became ill. She was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church and its Altar Guild. A past president of AARP, she helped organize holiday meals and knit dozens of pairs of mittens for Head Start children. 
 An avid bowler, she was elected to the Norwich Women’s Bowling Hall of Fame. She also sailed, skied, and was a Past-President and Life Member of the Norwich Business and Professional Women.
 She was a graduate of Clayton High School and the Ridley Business School in Binghamton. She worked for the Victory Markets corporate headquarters and the Carl Payne Insurance Agency.
 She loved gardening, and her beautiful flower garden was much admired and often visited.
 The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday at the Wilson Funeral Home in Norwich. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church . Burial will take place at a later date in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Chenango Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
