Mary Anderson


SMYRNA – Mary B. Anderson, 97, of Smyrna, passed away Thursday afternoon, March 8, 2007 at the home of her grandson.
Born in Akron, OH, on March 29, 1909, Mary was the daughter of Arthur and Hattie Hull. She grew up in the Akron area, where she attended the local schools, and was married to Raymond Anderson of Smyrna on Dec. 25, 1931. Mary and Ray took up residence in Smyrna right after their marriage where, from 1931 until 1973, they owned and operated several farms. In 1973, they retired and relocated to Beaver Meadow, where they made their home until 2006. For over 40 years, Mary was employed by the Utica Knitting Factory in Sherburne and by its successors, Chesebro Ponds, Lily White, and Sherwood Medical. She was an extremely active and community-minded lady who was a charter member, as well as a member for 52 years, of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Smyrna Fire Dept. Besides working for the 60+ in both Norwich and South Otselic, she was a regular swimmer at the Norwich YMCA. Considered the “”best pie baker in Chenango County,” Mary liked to play cards and go to the casinos.
Mary is survived by her children: Marilyn Jean Anderson of Hyattsville, Md., and Jonathan P. Anderson and wife Dawn of Smyrna; her grandchildren: Andrew Anderson and wife Carrie and Jay Anderson and wife Brianne all of Smyrna; and great grandchildren: Alex and Abby Anderson and Ray, Nicholas, and Jayson Anderson. She is also survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mary was predeceased by her husband Ray on June 23, 1992; her grandson, Daniel Bartlett, and several brothers and sisters.
Funeral services for Mary will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home of Norwich. The Rev. Jeremy Stopford of Norwich will officiate. Friends are invited to call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the service at 1 p.m. Interment will be at a later date in the Sherburne West Hill Cemetery.
Mary’s family has asked that memorial contributions be sent to the Smyrna Fire Dept. and Rescue Squad, Smyrna, NY 13464; or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815.
