Walter Smietana


NORWICH – Walter Smietana, 64, of Norwich, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, March 8, 2007 at Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Born Dec. 19, 1942 in Elizabeth, N.J., Walter was the son of Stanley and Regina (Rybicki) Smietana.  He grew up in Jersey City, N.J. and had worked first in the rendering industry for 25 years with Harrison Byproducts and later as a truck driver for Sysco Foods in Jersey City, N.J. for 17 years before retiring in May of 2005 and moving to Norwich.
He was a member of Teamsters Local 863 in New Jersey.  His retirement brought enjoyment at his family farm in Sherburne.  He also loved cooking and being with his family and friends.
On February 5, 1972, in Randolph, N.J., he married Nancy (Wellington) Smietana, who survives.  He is also survived by two sons and their wives, Jayson and Beth Smietana of Las Vegas and Dustin and Renata Smietana of Norwich; three grandchildren, Max and Emily Smietana of Las Vegas and Aleksander Smietana of Norwich; a brother, John Smietana and his wife, Beverly, of Carlstadt, N.J.; two nephews, Richard and Robert Smietana and four nieces, Diane Kocaj and Sarah, Lisa and Laura Smietana.  Walter was predeceased by a brother, Stanley Smietana and a sister, Mary Gortatowski.
Funeral services for Walter will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday at the Wilson Funeral Home.  Rev. Douglas Cunningham, pastor of St. Paul and St. Bartholomew Churches, will officiate.  Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Monday from noon until the time of the service.  Burial will take place at a later date.
