Lucius Jaquay


NORWICH – Lucius B. Jaquay, formerly of Waite Street, Norwich and most recently of Aberdeen, N.C., passed away Thursday morning, Feb. 15, 2007 in the Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, N.C., four days after his 102nd birthday.
The son of Chancey and Nellie (Ceperley) Jaquay, Lucius was born on Feb. 11, 1905, in Brookfield, where he grew up and attended the local schools. In 1928 he began his lengthy career with the Chenango County Highway Department, from which he retired in 1960 as an assistant superintendent. Lucius was a 50-year honorary Mason, and a man of many talents. He was well-known locally for his quality paper-hanging and painting expertise, skills which he developed back in Brookfield working with his brother-in-law and which he continued throughout his life, in many of the local homes and businesses.
On Dec. 31, 1930, in Pharsalia, Lucius and Gertrude Thompson were wed, and in 1955 built the house on Waite Street where they spent the remainder of their life together until moving to Aberdeen in 2006.
Lucius is survived by his wife of 76 years, Gertrude Jaquay of Aberdeen, N.C.; by his daughter and her husband, Florence and Gerry LaShomb of Fox Fire Village, N.C.; and by his grandchildren: Debralee LaShomb Kennedy and husband Gary, Geri LaShomb Nix and husband David, Hope Jaquay Pena and husband Dr. Guillermo, and Maurice Jaquay, Jr. He is also survived by his great grandchildren: Peter Kennedy and wife Shelley, Adam Kennedy, Brian Kennedy and wife Magen, Steven Nix, Kelly Nix, Stephanie Jaquay, and Elizabeth, Daniel, Carrie, Nicholas, and Laura Pena; by great, great granddaughter Hannah Marie Kennedy; and by his daughter-in-law, Carol Boyle Jaquay.
Lucius was predeceased by his son, Maurice Frank Jaquay in 1963; and by his sisters and brothers: Frances Maine, Hattie Crumb, Bessie Burdick, Mary Dye, Grace Piersma, Chancy “Tim” Jaquay, Floyd Jaquay, and Ernest Jaquay.
Funeral services for Lucius will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Jeff Hale, pastor of the Broad Street United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Monday from 11 a.m. until the service at 1 p.m.
