George Barnes, Jr.


After a courageous fight with cancer, George lost his battle on October 24, 2013 while residing at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Joan Marie (Coulter) Barnes of Sidney Center; 2 daughters, Penny Marie of Norwich and Ticia Ann (companion, Frank Guiles) of Earlville; special son-in-law, Jeffrey D. Marshall of New Jersey; 12 grandchildren: Andrea Barnes, Jacquelyn Marshall, Tyler Barnes, Angela and Paul Garcia, Jonel Strong, James Marshall, Caleb Strong, Abigayle Marshall, Marissa Natoli, Alison Marshall, Marcela Barnes and Patience Guiles; 2 great-grandsons, Braxton and Wyatt Garcia; and special friend Cheryl Kazalski.
George served in the Air Force in 1965 with an honorable discharge. He worked at Scintilla (Amphenol) as a dye cast, Heglemanns as a milk analyst, as well as at Donhill where he drove bulk truck. He then went to Breakstones from 1973-2008 working in the waste water lab and retiring after 35 years. Following retirement, he worked as an aide at Sidney Central School.
George was predeceased by his parents, George Barnes, Sr. in 1967 and Betty Titch in 2002, and half-brother, Harold Shelp in 1994.
He often enjoyed breakfast at Trackside and visiting with anyone who would talk. He had a great sense of humor and a love for life. George will be missed by so many.
Friends are invited to call from noon until 2 p.m. on Monday, October 28, 2013 at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. Sidney. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Burial will be private in Maplewood Cemetery, Mt. Upton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the NYS Veterans Home, 4207 State Highway 220, Oxford, NY 13830.
