Willard J. Smith


Williard J. Smith, 90, of Norwich, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2013 at the Valley View Manor Nursing Home.
Willard was born November 19, 1922 in Sherburne, son of the late Chester D. and Catherine H. Smith. He was a lifelong resident of the area and graduated from Norwich High School in 1941. Bill proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during WWII maintaining fighter planes. He worked for many years at Brightman’s Home Center in Norwich.
Willard was a kind, sweet and gentle man, who was loved by everyone who knew him. He thrived on the exchange of interesting ideas and conversation with friends and family. He engaged everyone with his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. He created crossword puzzles and was a lover of words. Bill will be missed, but never forgotten.
Bill is survived by his sister Julia (Carl) Brightman of Norwich, Mary Hollenbeck of Florida; nephews Rick and Jeanne Brightman of Norwich, David and Ellie Brightman of Florida, Robert Isliker of Florida; niece Laura Lekander; great nephew Chad and his wife Cindy Brightman of Texas, Christopher Brightman of Norwich; and nieces Allison and her husband Clint Wynn of Texas, and Ashley Brightman of Norwich.
He was predeceased by his sister Lorena Isliker and his brother Chester Smith.
There will be no calling hours. Interment and graveside services will be held at a later date in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Chenango County SPCA, 6160 County Road 32, Norwich, NY 13815.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, 116 N. Broad St., Norwich, NY.
