Norma States


Norma States, 88, Oxford, formerly of Idaho, passed away Wednesday, October 9, 2013, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Norma was born in Utica on March 18, 1925 the daughter of Lester and Mildred States Thorpe. She grew up in the Norwich and Oxford areas where she attended the local schools. While living in the area, Norma had been employed by the Norwich Pharmaceutical Co., the Knitting Mill and the Norwich Shoe Co. Later in life she moved to Boise, Idaho where she made her home for over 20 years. While there she was employed by Sears in its billing department. She eventually returned to the Norwich area 3 years ago where she continued to make her home.
Norma was without question an AVID bingo player. She knew all the rules, had all the equipment right down to her lucky charms which she would place around her cards. She also enjoyed drawing and painting with watercolors.
Norma is survived by her children Cindy Hubschmitt of Norwich, Kurt Deiss, Joseph Deiss of Binghamton and Trudy Deiss-Savich and husband John of Johnson City; her sister Mary Diamond of No. Norwich; her grandchildren John Atwell, Stacey Atwell, Courtney Deiss and Lauren Savich; and her great grandchildren Corey, Cody and Kelsie. Several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews also survive.
Norma was predeceased by her sisters Hilda Wayman and Jerry Cole, her brother Lester Thorpe Jr. and her significant other Stan Coleman.
A celebration of life for Norma will be held at a later date from the home of her sister, Mary Diamond.
