Elinor Homann

Elinor Rindom Hansen Homann, 83, passed away Thursday October 10, 2013 at the home of her son John Jr. after fighting a courageous battle with cancer.
Elinor was born in Woodbridge Township, New Jersey on May 14, 1930 the daughter of the late Magnus and Mildred Wiberg Hansen who immigrated from Denmark to Metuchen, New Jersey where she spent all of her childhood and young adult years. She attended Metuchen schools graduating from South Plainfield High School and attended Middlesex County College, Edison, NJ. Elinor married the love of her life John (Jack) Henry Homann Sr. on May 31, 1947 in the Dutch Reformed Church of Metuchen, NJ. They would have been married 66 years. Jack predeceased her December 11, 2012. They resided in and around Metuchen before building their own home on Tingley Lane, Oak Tree, Edison, NJ, living there for many many years while raising their 5 children, before retiring to the family farm, Christie Acres, Columbus, New York.
Elinor so enjoyed quilting, reading, herb gardening, antiquing, family genealogy, and traveling through the years with the family to old historical villages. She loved the ocean where she and Jack spent many winters in Folly Beach, SC.
Elinor was a member of the Never Idle 4-H group under the leadership of Mrs. Reeder as a child. She was a past member of American Legion Post 65, Metuchen. She was an assistant leader to the Oak Tree Girl Scout Troop and later Den Mother to Oak Tree Cub Scouts. Elinor was a past member of the Metuchen Reformed Church, Mary Circle, Quilters Guild and a member of Women Helping Women. Elinor was a past member of Douglas College Parents Group and the Dance Theater Guild. She became an Associate Member of Columbus Community Church, Columbus, NY, and a past member of the Alter Guild. Elinor formed and was a member of the CCC Quilters Guild, Needles & Pins Sewing, Quilting and Home Bureau later being held in the old historical Town Hall. She chaired the CCC Quilt and Flower show along with Linda Reese. Elinor also belonged to the Americana Village Quilters, Hamilton, NY.
Elinor spent the last several years putting her heart and soul into her little hamlet of Columbus which she loved and took so much pride in. She went out on her own to collect up donations to buy American flags for the poles along the road then moved on to barrels and started up a gardening club with a few town ladies and children planting her beautiful red geraniums. Then, just the past two winters went full speed ahead with getting Christmas lights upon the poles. With sadness in our hearts Elinor passed away before becoming Honorary Mayor of Columbus where she was to be presented with a beautiful sash and certificate at the Columbus Community Days. She surely will be missed.
Elinor is survived by her children, John and Barbara Homann Jr. of Columbus, NY, James and Mary Homann of Charleston, SC, SueAnne and Philip Miele of Columbus, NY, Jay and Nancy Homann of St. Augustine, FL, daughter in law Sharon Homann of Charleston, SC and Christine Homann who resides in heaven. She is survived by one brother Robert Hansen of TN and predeceased by her siblings, Borge, William and Otto Hansen, Alice Minney, Evelyn Distler, Irene Vogel and Daisy Distler.
