Leah Thompson


Leah J. Thompson, 91, a life long Norwich resident and most recently of the Chase Memorial Nursing Home of New Berlin, passed away Sat., Sept. 28, 2013 at the Chase Home.
Leah was born on March 12, 1922 in Norwich the daughter of Arnold and Edna Figary Gibbon. She grew up in Norwich where she attended the local schools. On Dec. 25, 1941 she married Albert Thompson who passed away Aug. 15, 2007. Over the years, Leah has worked for W.T. Grant’s, Fishman’s Dept. Store, the Norwich Knitting Mill, the Norwich Pharmacal Co. and J.J. Newberry’s in Owego.
Leah’s family was her life and she would protect them to the end. She enjoyed spending quality time with her family and would help them in their needs if at all possible. A woman with a big heart, she would help anyone who needed an extra hand. She enjoyed the simpler things in life, such as watching her birds, tending to her flowers and caring for the cats and dogs. Leah was also excellent cook and crocheter having made many items for her family and friends over the years which have a special place in their homes today.
Leah is survived by her children Blanche Carrol Zimmer and husband Stan of Owego, Cathy Osterhout and husband Bruce of Norwich, Thomas Thompson and wife Joan also of Norwich; 10 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; several great great grandchildren along with many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Besides her husband Albert, she was predeceased by her daughter Connie Nesbitt, her sisters Alma Smith and Marian Greeley and her brothers Chauncey and Arnold Gibbon Jr.
Private graveside services for Leah will be held at the convenience of the family in the Mt. Hope Cemetery. The Rev. Brian Conover, Pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church of Norwich will officiate. There will be no calling hours.
