Rev. Edward Stiess

NORWICH – The Reverend Edward William Stiess, age 88, died Monday, August 26, at his home in Norwich, NY with family members at his side. The only child of Ernest and Margaret Stiess, Ed is survived by his wife, Ruth Hampp Stiess; his children, Linda Stiess, Edward (Janet Nobis) Stiess, Martha (Steven) Simmons, and Timothy (Elizabeth Abbey) Stiess; and grandchildren Edward Simmons, Elizabeth Stiess and William Stiess.
Ed was born on November 28, 1924 in Philadelphia, PA. He was devoted to the church throughout his adult life, being ordained in 1954. Among his roles were rector at the All Faiths Church in Charlotte Hall, MD; archdeacon of the Diocese of Bethlehem, PA; and professor of Pastoral Theology at the Episcopal Divinity School of Cambridge, MA. He retired in 1987 and had since been enjoying family, friends and travel with his wife of 63 years. Whether at Myrtle Beach, SC or at Lake Bluff, NY, being on or near large bodies of water was always one of his joys - originating with his time in the Navy during WWII.
He was loved and respected by so many. He will be missed by his family, friends, as well as all of his former parishioners and students. Special thanks to Hospice of Chenango County for their loving care and support.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 37 W. Main Street, Norwich. Family will receive friends immediately following the service in the parish hall.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in memory of Edward Stiess may be made to the Emmanuel Episcopal Church of Norwich, NY or Hospice.
Arrangements are by the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home.
