Bruce Macumber


GUILFORD – Bruce S. Macumber, 62, a longtime resident of Guilford, NY has quietly left us to be with our lord on August 20, 2013.
Bruce was born in New Berlin, NY on September 25, 1950 to Stanley and Florence (Fenton) Macumber. Bruce spent his childhood in the Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton area finding work on local farms before enlisting in the Army for the Vietnam War in 1970. Bruce was honorably discharged from the Army in 1973. He found work at the SD Marshal company for a short period of time before being hired in 1974 at Scintilla (Amphenol), from which he retired in October of 2012.
Bruce was a fireman, EMT and volunteer at heart. He joined the South New Berlin Fire Department and rescue squad, and then served the Guilford Fire Department for 21 years, 18 years of which were served as fire chief. Bruce was a humble man who never wanted to be in the spotlight but always wound up being the “star of the show.” He was honored to receive Guilford’s Citizen of the Year award in 2012. Bruce enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, golfing, bowling and camping as well as watching old TV shows, cooking shows and cartoons with or without his grandchildren.
Bruce was predeceased by his mother, father and sister Regina. Bruce is survived by his wife of 29 years, Grace L. Macumber, his children Amy Abbott and husband Joseph of Smyrna, Timothy Macumber and wife Lynn of South New Berlin, Chipper Graham and wife Nicole of Mt. Upton, Kipper Graham and wife Christina of Guilford, and Richard Macumber of Norwich; his siblings Joan Herron, Gene and Brenda Macumber, Erna and Ed Powers, Judy and Doug Stanton, Nancy Ward, Colleen and Bill Elliot, Kevin Macumber, Karen and Charles Decker, Ed and Jan Macumber, and Ernie Hilliker. Bruce is also survived by ten grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, August 23, 2013, at C.H. Landers Funeral Home in Sidney. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2013. Burial with a Veterans and Fireman service honors will follow at the Butternut Valley cemetery in Copes Corners.
