Jeanne Cote


NORWICH – Jeanne Simone Cote, 90, nine-year resident of the Norwich Senior Housing apartments on West Main Street and most recently of Preston Manor, Oxford, died Jan. 28, 2007 at Chenango Memorial after a period of declining health.
She was born in Bedford, N.H., on Aug. 10, 1916, the daughter of Ubald and Ida (Paquette) Smith. There, she was educated by the Religious of Jesus Mary nuns at St. Augustin School.
Jeanne had been employed as a stitcher with the J.F. McElwain (Thom McAn) Company for many years and won a beauty and dance contest as “Miss McElwain” at the company’s frolic at age seventeen in 1933. Prior to retirement she was cafeteria manager at First NH Bank, Manchester, N.H.
She was predeceased by her husband, Albani (Al) A. Cote in 1978 and one son, Donald A. Cote in 1987.
Members of her family include her son, Oblate of Mary Immaculate, Brother Richard P. Cote in residence at St. Bartholomew/St. Paul Church, Norwich; one daughter, Denise-Cote Hopkins and son-in-law Halstead Hopkins of Taylor; a grandson, Noah Y. Mercier of Manchester, N.H.; several nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Calling hours and burial will be in New Hampshire. A memorial service will be held at St. Bartholomew’s Church, Norwich, on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 1131, Fairfax VA 22038-1131 or local A.D.A. chapter.
Local arrangements are by the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home of Norwich.
