Melvin Stowell


NORWICH – Melvin C. Stowell, 71, of Norwich, formerly of Sherburne, returned to his mother on Friday, May 3, 2013 at the Norwich Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
He was born March 8, 1942 in the Town of Vernon, a son of Lawrence and Mary Chase Stowell, and was raised in Madison where he received his education. A Sherburne resident most of his adult life, Melvin had a variety of occupations. He had been a pinsetter at the Sherburne Bowling Alley; a clerk/baker at Doyle’s Bakery; and caretaker of West Hill Cemetery. He also worked at I.L. Richer, and his favorite job was at the Larry Taylor Farm. Later, he worked at Standard Brands and then Kenyon Press until his retirement.
Melvin had attended the United Church of Christ in Sherburne, and was active with the Sherburne Historical Society. He was a huge fan of Mickey Mouse.
Surviving are his sisters, Ethel Forward of Bainbridge and Faye Smith of Guyton, GA; step-sisters, Kay Williams of Madison and Janet Stefura of Endicott; step-brothers, Glenn Forward and Fay Forward, both of Bouckville; and Dan Forward of Madison; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his aunt, Marcella Crumb and uncle, Freeman Chase.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m Tuesday from the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne, followed by interment in the West Hill Cemetery, Sherburne. Friends are invited to call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
