Charleen Carpenter


Charleen F. “Cheri” Carpenter, 65, of East Main Street, Smyrna, NY, passed away Thursday, April 11, 2013 at Crouse Hospital, Syracuse.
She was born May 24, 1947 in East Hamilton, a daughter of Herbert Lee and Lena Caroline Tarbell Mason. Her family moved to Earlville when she was an infant and she graduated from Earlville High School in June 1965. On July10, 1965, Charleen married Arnold Charles Carpenter at the Grace Episcopal Church in Earlville. Following their marriage, they lived in Smyrna, moving back to Earlville for three years before settling on East Main Street in Smyrna in May 1969. Charleen worked for many area businesses, including BevCase and TACO. For 12 years she worked for the Sherburne-Earlville Central School in Smyrna as a part-time aide and primarily as a food service worker in the cafeteria until the school closed in 1991. Charleen was an avid bowler at Hi-Skor Lanes in Earlville, having bowled in the Women’s and Couples Leagues until illness forced her retirement from bowling in 1992. She held high average many times and was League Secretary and Treasurer. She also served as Sergeant-at-Arms for the Earlville Women’s Bowling Association, and was named to the Hall of Fame in 2006.
Charleen was a member of the Smyrna Baptist Church. She was a member of the Smyrna Fire Department Auxiliary since 1976, where she held offices as President and Secretary and was currently on the disabled list. She was also a member of the Smyrna Fire Department since 1985, serving as Sunshine Officer. She was a past member of the Smyrna Emergency Squad. .
Surviving are her husband, Arnold; her children, Craig Carpenter and his companion, Kathy Licht of Smyrna; Jeffrey and Melida Carpenter of Arlington, TX; grandsons, George Alan Villareal and Jason Lawson; granddaughters, Megan Carpenter, Raquel Villareal, Ashley Lawson and Ashley Caitlin Seraguchi; great-granddaughters, Keira Rose Potts and Brooklyn Kay Potts; brother and sister-in-law, Lee “Joe” and Elaine Mason of Earlville; sisters-in-law, Janet Mason of Jacksonville, FL and Genette Marocchi of Rome; several nieces, nephews aunts and cousins. She was predeceased by a brother, Ronald Mason.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday from the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 3 Preston St., Earlville.
Interment will be in the Willcox Cemetery, Smyrna.
Friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday.
