Charles Cornell


HAMILTON – Charles (Chuck) Cornell passed away after battling a brain tumor for more than years. He was born November 22, 1945 the only child of Floyd and Ethel Cornell. He grew up in Hamilton, NY where he worked at the family run grocery store, graduating from Hamilton Central School and joining the U.S. Army during Vietnam, achieving the rank of Sergeant. He married Penny Mennig in 1970 and had a son Ron; after their divorce he married Jo-Ellen Gates in 1980. He retired in 2001 from Chenango County Sheriff’s Office and worked previously for the Madison County Sheriff’s Department. He was a member of the Hamilton Volunteer Fire Department in the 70s, the Earlville Fire Department in the 80s, and the South New Berlin and Sherburne Fire Departments for a brief time in the late 90s. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family and riding his motorcycle until he was unable. He liked NASCAR and Steven King books. He was an animal lover and had numerous dogs and cats over the years. He especially loved his family and would often brag and show pictures of his grandsons Dylan and Austin, who both still live in NY. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Jo-Ellen, and a son, Ronald, of Starke, Fl., 2 grandsons, Dylan and Austin, both from Sherburne NY, and his Beagle, Harley, and cat, Tigger.
