Emma Elsworth


SOUTH PLYMOUTH – Emma U. Elsworth, 88, a long-time resident of South Plymouth, passed away on Tuesday evening, March 12, 2013, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Born in February of 1925 in Milford, to Eddie and Leila Chesley Spielman, Emma had been a resident of the area since the age of 16, and had attended the Norwich High School. A hard worker all her life, Emma was employed by the W.T. Grant Company for over 25 years, and subsequently worked for George Zieno at City Floor and Wall Covering and at Clyde Young’s Produce. During these years, she also helped on the family farm. Emma married Hugh Elsworth on Aug. 25, 1946, and the couple moved to the farm in 1958, residing there for 46 years until their health mandated their move to the Gilmore Health Care Facility, now Norwich Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Above all else, Emma was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who doted on her family and loved caring for them.
Emma is survived by her children: Virginia “Ginny” Brown of South Plymouth, Carol Farnham of Norwich, and Eddie Elsworth and wife Laurie of Norwich. Also surviving are her grandchildren and their spouses: Penny Farnham, Paul and Donna Farnham, Cindy and Jim Barry, Jackie and Chris Lester, Becky and Eric Graham, Sarah Brown and Brandon Migdal, George (Jake) and Carissa Brown, Ray and Stacy Elsworth, and Leslie Elsworth; 16 great grandchildren; 10 great, great grandchildren, Emma’s step-sister, Ina; and nieces and nephews. Emma was predeceased by her husband, Hugh, on April 10, 2004; by her son-in-law, George Brown; her sister Jennie; and brothers Leslie Spielman, Ervie Groom, and John Groom.
Funeral services for Emma will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. Pastor Lawrence Russell of the Plymouth United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in the Wayside Rest Cemetery in Pharsalia. Friends are invited to call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.
