Carl Berry


NORWICH – Carl L. Berry, 89, of Norwich, passed away Sunday morning, Jan. 13, 2013 in the Chenango Memorial Hospital of Norwich.
Carl was born on June 3, 1923 in Norwich the son of Charles H. and Lucy Bosworth Berry Sr. He grew up in Norwich where he attended and graduated from the Norwich High School. Soon after his graduation, Carl was drafted into the United States Army where he served his country during World War II. He served in the Pacific Theatre until his honorable discharge. Returning home from the service to his country, Carl began a long career which would span 32 years with the United States Government, working as a Quality Assurance Specialist. Retiring at the age of 58, Carl embarked on another career taking up employment with General Dynamics where he worked as an independent contractor in quality assurance for military contracts. He once again retired at the age of 85.
Over the years Carl and his family made their home in Sherburne, Clinton, Hamilton and Norwich where has lived for the past 32 years. He was a wonderful husband, a great dad and grandfather and was always there to provide for his family. His common sense was always evident in anything he did. In keeping with his service to his country, Carl was a life member of the Norwich VFW Post #2782 and also a member of the Norwich American Legion Post #189. For several years he had work part-time for the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home.
In 1947, he married June Mathers, who survives. Besides his wife June, Carl is survived by his children Dr. Patricia Ann Baszczuk of Manalatam, NJ, Craig Berry and wife Melissa of Norwich, David Berry and wife Jane of Cowdrey, Colo., his brother Charles E. Berry of Norwich, his grandchildren Geoffrey Baszczuk of Manhattan, Dr. Daniel Berry and his fiancee Dr. Beth Rodkey of Dallas, Texas, Erika and Reese Berry of Norwich. Also surviving is one great niece Jessica Berry and one great nephew Jason Berry, both of Vermont, his sister-in-law and her husband Betty and Bill Irwin, sister-in-law Judy Montgomery and brother-in-law Fred Mathers.
Carl was predeceased by his daughter, Karen Ann Berry.
A funeral service for Carl will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. Interment with full military rites will be held at a later date from the Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.
