James Avolio


NEW BERLIN – James A. Avolio Jr., 77, of New Berlin, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, at his home in New Berlin.
Jim was born on Dec. 12, 1935 in Paterson, N.J., the son of James and Helen Schaediger Avolio. He grew up in the Paterson area and in May of 1953 entered the United States Air Force, serving his country until his honorable discharge in May of 1961. While serving his country, Jim met Mavis Gurr. Jim and Mavis were married on March 23, 1957 in Kent, England and in April of 1957, they returned to the United States. In 1972, Jim and his wife came to the Chenango County area, where he gained employment with Norwich-Eaton and its successors. He worked for P&G until his retirement and subsequently gained employment with the Gilmour Health Care Facility, which is now Norwich Rehab and Nursing Facility.
Jim is survived by his wife Mavis of New Berlin; his children: Karen Kawam and husband Elias of Arizona, Susan Walling and husband Kern of South New Berlin, Daniel Avolio and wife Jeanette of New Berlin, Laurie Brooks and husband Daniel of West Pawlet, VT, Audrey Piatti and husband Michael of Leonard, N.J., David Avolio and wife Kimberly of New Berlin and Dennis Avolio and wife Robin of Norwich. Also surviving are 26 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; one unborn great grandchild; his sisters Joan Sorgi and husband Frank of Pompton Lakes, N.J. along with nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Helen Pasko.
At Jim’s request, services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
Interment will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery.
Arrangements are with the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home.
