Kelly Hakes

OTSELIC – Kelly Mae Hakes, “Coach Kelly,” 46, of Country Club Road, Appomattox, Va. died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012. She was born on April 11, 1966 in Ithaca, a daughter of Bruce W. and Lonnie Loomis Hakes of North Pitcher.
In addition to her parents she is survived by her loving son, Chandler, and his father Jeffrey O’Rourke; a brother, William Hakes (Kristy) of McGraw; sisters, Laura Davis of South Otselic, and Jaclyn Hakes of Saratoga Springs; and seven nieces and nephews, Joshua, Alexander, and Eric Hakes and Tyler, Dustin, Kaitlyne and Madison Davis.
Kelly graduated from the Otselic Valley Central School of South Otselic in 1984. She received her A.A.S from SUNY Delhi, where she played collegiate softball. She earned her B.S. degree from the University of Central Florida.
Kelly was an energetic and talented business woman. She started her business career as a marketing coordinator for several businesses from Peekskill to Minneapolis and then Florida. She managed several Steak and Ale restaurants in Florida becoming the youngest general manager (male or female) in the corporation history.
Most recently she was Vice President of Craneworks, Inc. and co-owner with Jeffery O’Rourke. Within the span of 15 years, this niche company started in a basement office with two employees and has grown to a 12,000 square feet office with 14 employees serving several Naval and Air Force clients throughout the northeast.
Kelly actively contributed to the community. She has been passionately involved with the Appomattox Soccer Association, most recently as the treasurer and co-coach of this year’s undefeated U-10 team. She contributed greatly to the Association with her time, travel, money, supplies, and so much more. Kelly’s main focus in coaching was teaching sportsmanship, teamwork, and respect. And she made it fun.
Kelly was a very generous and giving friend to many. She attended the Memorial United Methodist Church in Appomattox, Va.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday at South Otselic United Methodist Church by Pastor Carl Johnson.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Appomattox Soccer Association, P. O. Box 734, Appomattox, VA 24522 or the Appomattox Youth Sports Association. PO Box 761, Appomattox, VA 24522.
