Elmo Robertson

NORWICH – Elmo Vincent Robertson, aged 92, died peacefully on Nov. 18, 2012, at his home in Port Richey, Florida.
He is survived by his loving nieces and nephews, Patricia Robertson Bonasera of Dublin, CA, Thomas E. Robertson of San Francisco, CA, Michael V. and Lynne Robertson of Norwich, NY, Lori A. Robertson of Littleton, CO., his step-son, Kent Mersereau of Texas, and many friends and neighbors who mourn his passing.
Elmo was born on March 10, 1920, in Sidney, to Mable (neé Slawson) Hughes Robertson and Vincent Amos Robertson. He is predeceased by his parents, his half-brother, Archie Hughes of Unadilla, and his brother, Vernon C. Robertson, of Norwich.
Elmo was a member of the 1939 graduating class of Norwich High School. In May 2012, he participated in a 75-year celebration for the surviving members of the 1937 undefeated, untied, and unscored-upon NHS football team. This celebration was a happy occasion for Elmo and a special opportunity to revisit his beloved home territory in Chenango County.
Elmo proudly served as a medic at the U.S. Army 7th Station Hospital in Oran, South Africa during World War II. Upon his return to Norwich after the war, he was employed by Hotchkin Dairy and later at Norwich Pharmaceuticals. He also served as a volunteer fireman with the Norwich Fire Department, and he was a licensed pilot who enjoyed flying small aircraft.
Elmo’s great wit, his talent for story telling, and his affectionate nature will be sadly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. In accordance with his wishes, a private gathering will be held to honor his memory.
