Vivian Cate


NORWICH – Vivian J. Cate, 99, a long time Norwich resident, passed away Saturday evening, Oct. 20, 2012, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Vivian was born in Long Branch, N.J. on Nov. 21, 1912, the daughter of Ferdinand and Edna Worst Selle. She grew up in Syracuse and was a 1932 graduate of the Blodgett Vocational High School. On June 24, 1938 in Syracuse, she married Edward Cate, who passed away Nov. 5, 1999. In 1946, Vivian and her family moved to Norwich where she eventually gained employment with GLA and its successors. While with the company she worked as a secretary for over 25 years, retiring in 1975. Following her retirement, she and her husband enjoyed many trips back and forth to Florida, as well as camping trips to the St. Lawrence and Adirondack Mountains.
Vivian was a faithful and dedicated member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church of Norwich, where she was a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Women. She was also a member of the Norwich Home Bureau.
Vivian is survived by her children Gary Cate and wife Linda of Norwich, Linda Davis and husband Terrence of Estes Park, Colo.; her grandchildren: Susan Cate of Syracuse, Karen Leiva and husband Wuilly of Lancaster, Pa. and Michael Davis and wife Ruth of Denver, Colo. Also surviving are her great grandchildren Ashley, Elania, Andrew, Lauren, Zachary and Ian Mieyer and Liam Leiva, along with several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Vivian will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday from the Emmanuel Episcopal Church. The Very Rev. Charles Taylor will officiate.
Following the service the family will greet friends in the parish hall of the church.
Interment will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
Arrangements are by the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home.
