Joseph Brois


NORWICH – Joseph J. Brois, 77, of Grove Avenue and formerly of New York City, passed away on Friday, Jan. 12, 2007 at Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Born July 29, 1929 in the Bronx, Joseph was the son of Joseph C. and Julianna (Wewiorski) Brois. He graduated from Evander Childs High School in the Bronx and then enlisted in the U.S. Army, intending to serve two years, but staying on for a third year when the Korean Conflict broke out. Following his military service, Joe worked for Ward Leonard Electric in Mount Vernon for two years while studying for entry into the New York Police Department. He served NYPD for 28 years as a patrol officer and a detective sergeant. He was on the captains list when he retired in 1983. Joe moved to Norwich in 1985 and in 1990 opened the first dollar store in Chenango County on East Main Street.
He was a member of the NYPD Benevolent Association and of the VFW and American Legion.
Joseph is survived by five sons and their wives, Stephen and Maralyn Brois of Bedford Corners, Patrick Brois of Norwich, Robert and Nereida Brois of McDonough, Joseph A. Brois of Las Vegas and David C. Brois of Norwich; four grandchildren, Heather, Lauren, Evan and Eric; two brothers, John Brois and his wife, Claire of Virginia and Stanley Brois of Lindenhurst, N.J.; three sisters, Jean Failla of Spring Valley, Sophie Erickson of Syracuse and Mary DeAngelis of Ramsey, N.J. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He was predeceased by two brothers, Walter and Theodore Brois.
Funeral services for Joseph will be held at noon on Wednesday at the Wilson Funeral Home. There will be no calling hours. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
