John Poggioli


PLYMOUTH – John Poggioli, 88, of County Road 19, passed away peacefully on Friday, Aug. 24, 2012 at his home with family by his side.
Born in New Rochelle on Independence Day, July 4, 1924, John was the son of Giovanni and Vincenza (Rabasca) Poggioli. After graduating high school, John served in World War II in the Pacific theater with the Marine Corps, 4th Division. He was injured in Saipan in 1943, earned a Purple Heart, and was honorably discharged in 1945. John was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans and the Order of the Purple Heart.
Soon after his return to the homefront, on Jan. 7, 1945, John married his beloved wife of 67 years, Florence (Dow) Poggioli, who survives. It was then that he began his profession in firefighting with the New Rochelle Fire Department. After completing an associate’s degree in firefighting science, he earned the rank of lieutenant, captain, then deputy commissioner, and retired as deputy commissioner after 31 years of valiant service. In 1977, John relocated with his wife to Plymouth, where they spent the remainder of their retirement years together.
John was a prolific artist, a talented gardener and enjoyed the sport of hunting. He was a very devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
John is survived by his son, David Poggioli; grandsons Jason Poggioli, and his wife Jessica, Justin Poggioli, and his wife Arpine; and great-granddaughter Mia Page Poggioli. He was predeceased by his son, John G. Poggioli.
At John’s request, funeral services will take place when he can be reunited with his wife, Florence. There will be no calling hours.
