Paul Sastri

NORWICH – Paul E. Sastri, 67, of Norwich, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown.
Born on Aug. 8, 1945, in Sidney, Paul was the son of Angelo and Frances (Arbuckle) Sastri. For several of his younger years Paul lived in New Berlin, where his parents operated The Corner House. He eventually moved to Norwich, where he graduated from Norwich High School with the class of 1965. Paul is survived by his wife of 45 years, Charleen (Curtis) Sastri.
Paul was employed for 40 years by Norwich-Eaton Pharmaceuticals and its successors, Procter & Gamble and OSG. Spending time with his family was important to Paul. He was a devoted and loving father and grandfather. Celebrating holidays and birthdays together as a family was very special to him. His grandchildren, who affectionately called him, “Pop Pop” loved being with him. They especially loved riding in Paul’s white 1972 Ford Convertible.
One of his favorite pastimes was golfing, and he took particular pleasure in playing with his “Fab Five” teammates. Paul would never miss an opportunity to play a round of golf with this group. Paul also shared his time with many wonderful friends planning the 50 and 60’s dances. He would often vacation with his friends and their families at the Norwich Family YMCA Camp. Paul also visited Cancun, Aruba, St. Martin and Myrtle Beach with these good friends. Paul was an avid sports fan. He could be found watching his beloved New York Yankees and New York Giants at home.
In addition to his wife, Paul is survived by his daughter, Joanne Woodard, and her husband, Pat, of Norwich, his son, Shawn Sastri, and his wife, Karen, of Norwich, and his daughter, Katie Donovan, and her husband, Jim, of Carver, MA. Paul is also survived by seven grandchildren: Curtis and Corry Woodard, Gehrig, Jackson and Mikayla Sastri, and Charlie and Joey Donovan. Sister Jean Goodrich, and her husband, Bob, of Norwich, also survive, as do several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Paul at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul’s Church, with Rev. Ralph Bove, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul’s Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m.
Contributions in Paul’s memory may be made to the Norwich/Oxford Little League, 141 Morgan Acres Road, Norwich, NY 13815, or the Journey of Hope, South Shore Hospital, 55 Fogg Road, South Weymouth, MA 02190.
