Carl Blackman


PLYMOUTH – Carl H. Blackman, 87, a life long resident of the Plymouth area, passed away Friday, Aug. 10, 2012, at the VA Medical Center in Syracuse.
Carl was born on Dec. 15, 1924 in Plymouth, the son of Willie and Ceta Cobb Blackman. He attended school in Heady’s Corners and on March 23, 1943 he entered the United States Army, serving his country until his honorable discharge on Oct. 3, 1945. Returning home, Carl gained employment with the Norwich Shoe Co. for a brief period of time. In 1965, he became employed with Victory Markets, where he would remain for the rest of his working career, retiring in 1987. During his time with Victory, Carl worked in the company’s electrical and refrigeration department and soon became known and respected for his work.
Carl was a gentle and kind person who enjoyed watching the wildlife around his home, especially his birds. He liked to hunt and would spend countless hours with his wife Mary putting together puzzles. He was also a member of the McDonough American Legion.
On July 15, 1961 in Mt. Rose, Pa, he married Mary Silvernail.
Carl is survived by his wife Mary; his children Pamela Gilbert and husband Ron of Norwich, Wendi VanOrden and husband Bill of Norwich, Ira (Ike) Blackman and wife Connie of South Plymouth, David Blackman and companion Katie Dyson of South Plymouth, Edwin Blackman of Florida, Joseph Blackman also of Florida and Carol O’Neil of Camilus; his sisters Helen Markham, Grace Franklin and June Manwarren all of Norwich; his brothers Frederick Blackman and wife Bertha of East Pharsalia, Lester Blackman of Preston, Leslie Blackman and wife Joyce of Preston, Arthur Blackman of Norwich and Leonard Blackman of Smyrna. Also surviving are his grandchildren Bill Blackman and companion Shona Fox of North Pharsalia, Jennifer Fitch of Oxford and Nicole Blackman and companion Joe Crandall of Norwich, and Aaron Blackman of Hawaii; 10 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Carl was predeceased by his sisters Doris Crandall and Myrtle Horton.
Funeral services for Carl will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Steven Simpson, Carl’s nephew, will officiate. Interment with full military rites will follow in the South Plymouth Cemetery.
Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.
