Richard Newman


SHERBURNE – Richard T. “Dick” Newman, 74, of North Main St., passed away Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007 at his home.
He was born Aug. 4, 1932 in Sherburne, a son of Roderick J. and Mary E. Cahill Newman. He was a 1950 graduate of Sherburne High School, where he excelled in sports. He earned 12 letters, one for each of his four years in football, basketball and baseball, and won many honors for himself and his teams. He then attended Ithaca College on a baseball scholarship. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. On Nov. 30, 1957, Dick was united in marriage to Joan Wynn in Sherburne. A life-long Sherburne resident, he had worked for TACO, Chenango Valley Pet Foods, and then as a salesman for Mody Real Estate.
Mr. Newman was a communicant of St. Malachy’s Church where he had been an altar server and coached the church league basketball team. He was a 25-year member of the Sherburne Fire Department; and a member of the award winning American Legion sponsored Sentinels Drill Team. His love of sports also extended to golf.
Surviving are his wife, Joan; his children, Virginia J. and Chris H. Chesebro of Norwich; Suzanne M. Newman of Endicott; Douglas E. and Aimee D. Newman of Sherburne; two sisters, Genevieve Andrews of Sherburne and Louise Diamond of New Hartford; a brother and sister-in-law, Edward, Sr. and Doris Newman of Sherburne; two grandchildren, Elizabeth A. Chesebro and Andrew D. Chesebro, both of Norwich; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Malachy’s Church, Sherburne, followed by burial in St. Malachy’s Parish Cemetery, Sherburne.
Friends are invited to call at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
