FRANCIS CARAVAGLIO
NORWICH – Mr. Francis J. Caravaglio, age 73, of Nashua, N.H. passed away on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 unexpectedly at home.
Born in Norwich on Jan. 30, 1939, he was the son of the late Frank and Rose (Mollica) Caravaglio. On May 18, 1963, he was united in marriage with Janice Guido. The companionship and love that was shared by the couple was evident in their 49 year union.
A recipient of a General Motors scholarship, Fran was a three-sport athlete and scholar at the University of Rochester. He was a member of Keidaeans, Theta Delta Chi National Secretary, and Campus President. In football, Fran was named Outstanding Player on the 1958 Undefeated Season team. In 1961 he won the Louis A. Alexander Award and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in the University of Rochester’s first Electrical Engineering class. Fran was briefly employed by AT&T as part of the management program prior to serving as an officer in the Air Force. As a young Second Lieutenant, he helped test the Stargazer gondola on display at the National Museum of the US Air Force at Wright Patterson AFB. In 1966, he received his Masters of Business Administration with Honors in Research and Development Management from the University of Chicago. Fran retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel after 21 years in Intelligence, Radar and Air Traffic Control. He continued to work in Military and International Air Traffic Control Systems at Raytheon Corporation in Sudbury, MA until he retired in 1997. In 2008, Fran was inducted into the University of Rochester Hall of Fame and participated in the 50th anniversary ceremonies recognizing the 1958 University of Rochester Football team. He greatly enjoyed golfing and spending time with his children and grandsons while retired.
Fran is survived by his loving wife, Janice; their devoted children, Mary Frances and Michael Bohan of Robbinsville, N.J. and Stephen and Laurie Caravaglio of Wilmington, N.C.; beloved grandsons, Evan and Sean Bohan, Andrew and Matthew Caravaglio. He is also survived by a brother, Vincent Caravaglio; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Kathleen and Alphonse DeSantis of Utica; his nieces and nephews, Carmelita and Joseph Zutter, MaryRose and Michael Cerminaro, Mariangela and Michael Coriale, Rocco and Corinne Leone, and Patricia and Craig Klein; many great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and longtime friends, especially acknowledging Robert and Marcia Alie. He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mary and Salvatore Guido; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Pasquale Leone.
Visitation will be held Tuesday morning from 9-11 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave., Utica, NY 13501, 1-800-357-3019. Fran’s funeral service will commence on Tuesday at noon at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish, Utica, where his Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Rev. James Cesta. Entombment will take place in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum with Military Honors.
