Gary Young


SHERBURNE – J. Gary Young, 79, of October Hill Lane, passed away Sunday, July 15, 2012 at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.
He was born on April 30, 1933 in Spring Valley, a son of the late Albon and Vera Relyea Young and was a graduate of Stony Point High School. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1953 to 1955. On May 3, 1958, Gary married Mary A. Laiso in St. Augustine Church, New City. Gary owned and operated G & V Young Paving Co. in Stony Point, Rockland County and then worked as a heavy equipment operator for the Rockland County Highway Department for 15 years until his retirement. He was always mechanically inclined and was a talented wood craftsman who enjoyed making furniture. He and Mary bought their Sherburne property in 1989 and moved to the area in 2003. He was a communicant of St. Malachy’s Church in Sherburne.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Mary; his children, Kathleen and Jim Rostberg, Isanti, MN; Jay and Melinda Young of Plattekill; Laura Betty of Walden; Caroline and Jack Deligny of Bloomingburg; sister, Barbara Willis of Maine; sister and brother-in-law, Jill and Michael Leach of Stony Point; brother Victor Young of Stony Point; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a son-in-law, Robert Betty on Sept. 11, 2003, and a sister-in-law, Judy Young on July 10, 2012.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday from St. Malachy’s Church, East State St., Sherburne, followed by interment with military honors in St. Malachy’s Cemetery.
Friends are invited to call at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. The rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Immaculate Conception Church, 26 John St., Stony Point.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the ALS Foundation, Greater New York Chapter, 42 Broadway, Suite 1724, New York, NY 10004.
