Marilyn Travis


NORWICH – Marilyn Keyes Travis, a former resident of Norwich, passed away, Saturday, May 12, 2012 at her home in New Canaan, Conn. She was 84.
Born Jan. 18, 1928 in Owego, New York, she was the daughter of the late H. Lynn and Martha Dailey Keyes. Marilyn was predeceased by her husband, Robert J. Travis, and her sister, Beverly Heinritz. Marilyn is survived by her daughter, Lynne Burns and her husband Christopher of Bluffton, S.C.; son, James Travis and Ellen Bobka of Armonk, New York; son John Travis and Barbara Punzi of Stamford, Conn.; and two grandchildren, Michael Burns of Bridgeport, Conn, and Jennifer Burns of Stamford, Conn.
Marilyn graduated from Weylister College, Milford, Conn. in 1947, and was employed by IBM in Endicott, New York until 1950. She married Robert J. Travis in 1950 and moved to Norwich, where her three children were born. The family moved to Stamford, Conn. in 1965 where she worked for Nestle for 21 years managing marine insurance and international shipping claims. Marilyn enjoyed her family and friends, working with Cub Scouts as a den mother, snowshoeing at the cabin, and boating on Long Island Sound. After moving to New Canaan in 1995, she loved traveling with friends, being a member of the Newcomer’s Club, the Garden Center, the Senior Center, the Women’s Club, and making calls for Are You Okay (RUOK). She loved the family tradition of walking to the town green for caroling on Christmas Eve. Marilyn was a Stephen Minister and a deacon at the First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, May 24, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan, 178 Oenoke Ridge, New Canaan, Conn. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 23, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main Street, New Canaan, Conn.
