BRUCE ASHTON
SOUTH PLYMOUTH – Bruce A. Ashton, 55, of South Plymouth, passed away unexpectedly Saturday afternoon, April 21, 2012 at the Community Memorial Hospital of Hamilton.
Bruce was born in Norwich on Jan. 28, 1957, the son of Glenn and Theadora Brown Ashton. He grew up in the South Plymouth and North Pharsalia area and attended school in South Otselic. On Oct. 13, 1979, he married Janice Burt, who survives.
Bruce was a 30-year plus employee of the United States Postal Service and was a familiar sight around the countryside delivering mail to his postal customers. He was a fun loving guy who was infatuated with his granddaughter and was excited about his grandchild on the way. He was a true enthusiast of all sports. A die hard Giants fan, he was especially pleased earlier this year with their Super Bowl win. He enjoyed a good round of golf with his family and friends. He especially enjoyed music and loved playing his guitar. Bruce also enjoyed his hunting, fishing, anything to do with the environment and tending to his gardens. He was an avid Civil War Historian.
Bruce is survived by his wife Janice of South Plymouth, his sons Matthew Ashton and his wife Valerie of Long Island, Colin Ashton of Pharsalia, his granddaughter Nolyn and his grandbaby to be. Also surviving are his brothers and sisters; Eric Ashton and wife Sue of Long Island, Stephen Ashton and wife Bobbi of Sherburne, Brenda Crandall and husband Lawrence of Sherburne, Boyd Ashton and wife Rebecca of Norwich, Mark Ashton of Plymouth, Marsha Cornelius and husband Steve of Norwich, Greg Ashton and wife Denise of North Pharsalia and Penny Swertfager and husband David of Dansville, along with 21 nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his father-in-law and mother-in-law Raymond and Irene Burt of South Otselic, sister-in-law Nancy and husband Stephen Will of Oriskany Falls, brothers-in-law Robert and wife Bridget Burt of Whitesboro, and Michael and wife Kimbel Burt of New Orleans. Bruce was predeceased by his parents and his brother, David.
A funeral service for Bruce will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. Interment will be at a later date in the Deer Pond Cemetery of North Pharsalia.
Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Wednesday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m.
