Helen Hurlbut Roberts


OXFORD – Helen Hurlbut Roberts, 97 of Elmira, formerly of Oxford passed away at the Chemung County Nursing Facility on Dec. 26, 2006.  She was born on September 21, 1909 in Wales Center, NY the daughter of the late Clyde and Julia (Nevinger) Hurlbut.  On December 25, 1931 in Union City, PA she married Glenn D. Roberts, who passed away on June 1, 1989.
She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Lowell and Asta Roberts of Chapel Hill, NC; her daughter and son in law, Julie and David Biviano of Pine City, NY; her grandchildren, Tomi-An Roberts, Lisen Roberts, Michael Biviano and Jennifer Biviano McKenzie; her great grandchildren, Annika Davis, Mia Davis and Marina Battenfield; her sister, Harriet Ryther of Morris and several nieces and nephews.
Helen was a graduate of Houghton College and enjoyed a long career in education, having taught in Guilford and Oxford.  During her tenure as a high school math teacher, she was recognized as “Teacher of the Year” and served as an advisor to several classes, as well as the National Honor Society.  She was well loved and respected by her students and colleagues.
After her retirement, Helen enjoyed spending winters in Bradenton, FL with her husband, Glenn, also a retired educator.  In Oxford, she was a member of the Birthday Club and the Travelers Book Club and enjoyed her morning chats with the girls in the Coffee Club.  Often in the late afternoon, her friends would join her for Happy Hour on her side porch.  She was a long time member of the United Church of Oxford and also a member of the Retired Teachers Group.
Funeral and committal services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006 at 11:00 AM at the United Church of Oxford, 25 Main St., Oxford with the Rev. Allen C. Lang, pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Oxford.
Friends may call at the Church from 10 AM until the time of the service.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to:  Woodbrook Adult Home, 1250 Maple Ave., Elmira, NY 14904.  The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the staff of Woodbrook for the loving care given to Helen over the past 5 ? years.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Oxford.
