LAWRENCE ZIMMERMAN SR.
SHERBURNE – Lawrence J. Zimmerman Sr., 80, of County Rd. 23, passed away Saturday, April 21, 2012 at his home with his family by his side.
He was born September 30, 1931 in Queens, a son of Joseph and Eva Stegerwald Zimmerman and received his education in local schools. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, having served in the Korean Conflict. On Jan. 29, 1955, Lawrence married Carolyn Pruitt in Bradford, IN. He was a plumber with the Union Local #112 and worked for J & K Plumbing and Heating in Binghamton until his retirement in 1994. Larry enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as radio controlled model airplanes and model trains. He was an avid reader, especially about the military.
Mr. Zimmerman was a communicant of St. Malachy’s Church in Sherburne, where he was a Eucharistic Minister, a member of the Church Council Board, and the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #876 of Sherburne.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn; his children, Lawrence, Jr. and Patricia Zimmerman of Chenango Bridge; Edward and Elaine Zimmerman of North Norwich; Dennis and Maria Zimmerman of Southbury, CT; Kathleen and Drexel Maust of Milford, NH; Elizabeth and Glenn Renfer of Whitney Point; a sister and brother-in-law, Anna and Gilbert Lorenz of Greenlawn, NY; a sister-in-law, Lois Zimmerman of Long Island; twelve grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, John and Joseph Zimmerman, and two sisters, Carolin Loggia and Margaret Weston.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Wednesday from St. Malachy’s Church, Sherburne, with Fr. Lester Smith as celebrant. Interment with military honors in St. Malachy’s Cemetery will follow the service.
Friends are invited to call at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, his family has requested that contributions be made in his memory to St. Malachy’s Church, PO Box 722, Sherburne NY 13460.
