Irma Simpson

BAINBRIDGE – Irma E. Simpson, 93, formerly of Bainbridge and most recently of South Plymouth, passed away Monday evening, April 9, 2012, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital, following a short illness.
Born in Smyrna in December of 1918, Irma was one of the three daughters of Munroe and Hazel Henry Slater. While growing up, she attended the one-room Smyrna schoolhouse through the 8th grade, then finished her schooling in District 4 of Smyrna. In 1942, Irma went to work for the Berglas Manufacturing Company in Norwich, subsequently becoming employed by Bendix Corporation (Scintilla) where she worked for 38 1/2 years as a laborer in the paint department. Irma retired in 1980, but immediately began her second career as a caregiver for area families, and for her own daughter and sisters and brothers-in-law. A very giving person, Irma spent most of her life taking care of other people and was always ready and willing to help anyone who needed a hand. One of her joys was to travel. If the car left the driveway, she wanted to be in it. Irma enjoyed going down the country roads to check out the fall leaves, or just going anywhere at all. She had visited Florida, and at one time had owned a home there.
Irma is survived by her grandchildren and their spouses: Linda and Arthur Gager, Jeff and Barbara Blackman, and Andy Blackman and his companion, Patricia; and by her brother-in-law, Jack Engel. Also surviving are 7 great grandchildren, 9 great, great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. On April 23, 1967, in Richfield Springs, Irma married Nelson Simpson, who passed away in 1973. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Arleeta Wolter, her sister, Helen Engel, and sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and William Stevens.
Funeral services for Irma will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. Pastor Brad Keator will officiate. Friends are invited to call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Saturday from 11 a.m. until the service at 1 p.m.
Please consider memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Assoc., 6390 Fly Road, 2nd Floor, East Syracuse, NY 13057.
