Jean Tompkins


SOUTH NEW BERLIN – Jean D. Tompkins, 93, of South New Berlin, passed away at Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich on Feb. 13, 2012.
She was born in Pleasant Valley, the daughter of Ralph and Carrie May (Sanders) DeGarmo. She married Robert J. Tompkins in Rhinebeck on Nov. 21, 1936. He passed away in 1989. She was a homemaker and had been employed by the South New Berlin Library. She was active in the First Baptist Church of South New Berlin where she had served as a Sunday school teacher, church clerk, financial secretary and was a member of the senior citizens group of the church. She was a 4-H leader, teaching many young ladies to sew. She enjoyed crafts and particularly enjoyed restoring quilts.
She is survived by her sons, Ralph Tompkins and wife Nancy of South New Berlin, and Ronald Tompkins and wife Ruth of Bainbridge, five grandchildren, Patti Funke (Kurt), Barbara Perron (Peter), Timothy Tompkins(Jennifer), Shawn Tompkins (Sara) and Theresa Pondofino. And several great grand children and great- great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Muriel Marston of Maine and a brother in law, David Tompkins of Rhinebeck.
She was predeceased by her husband and a brother Henry DeGarmo. 
A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of South New Berlin with the Rev. Barry Davis officiating. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be at a later date in Wurtenburg Cemetery in Rhinebeck.
In lieu of flowers friends are asked to make donations to the Memorial Fund of the First Baptist Church  of South New Berlin, P.O. Box 69, South New Berlin, NY 13843 in her memory.
