John Tumminia


NORWICH – John M. Tumminia, 74, well known plumbing and heating contractor and owner of Norwich Plumbing and Heating, passed away unexpectedly Thursday evening, Feb. 9, 2012, in the Albany Medical Center.
John was born in Brooklyn on Nov. 30, 1937 the son of Rosario and Anna Spardella Tumminia. He received his education in Brooklyn and came to the Norwich area in 1966 where he gained employment with Gracin and Morse. In the early 1970s John began his own business, Norwich Plumbing and Heating, which he still operated today with his business partner, Rich (RT) Towndrow.
A train enthusiast, John enjoyed all types of trains. He was also fond of animals and was always up for a good game of cards with his boys. The NY Giants were his #1 team and he was thrilled to have been able to see their latest victory. He was also a lover of plants, enjoyed his garden and enjoyed feeding and watching the birds at his home.
John is survived by his children; Theresa Tumminia of Connecticut, Robert Tumminia and his wife Donna of Sullivan, John Tumminia Jr. and his wife Marcia of McDonough, Michael Tumminia and his wife Louise of Greene, Rosario (Ross) Tumminia and his wife Janet of Norwich, Kari Johns and her husband Philip of Connecticut and Matthew Tumminia of Binghamton, his special friend and companion Sherry Angle and her daughter Amanda who made their home with John, and her son Cody Angle of Norwich, along with many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Also surviving is his sister Anna Andres and husband George of Florida, his brother-in-law Robert Gill, his first wife and the mother of his children Patricia Barrows of Florida and his business partner Rich Towndrow. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
John was predeceased by his longtime partner and companion June Smith Jensen as well as his sister Rose Gill and brother Paul Tumminia.
In keeping with John’s wishes, services will be private and there will be no calling hours. Interment will be at a later date in the Union Cemetery of McDonough.
