Irean Thurston


NORWICH – Irean E. Thurston, 89, of Norwich, passed away Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Irean was born in LeRoy, Pa. on Nov. 30, 1922 the daughter on Erwin E. and Almina Brown Hatton. She grew up in the LeRoy area where she attended the local schools. On Feb. 17, 1940 in LeRoy, she married Frederick Thurston, who passed away June 17, 1997. She came to the area over 60 years ago and has made her home in Guilford, Unadilla, Tyner and Norwich area. While living in the Norwich area she made her home at Grace View Manor Apts. as well as Preston Manor and she truly enjoyed the company.
First and foremost in Irean’s life was her family. Where ever she made her home her family came first and she was always involved in local church activities. She enjoyed music and dancing and always was ready to attend the Bluegrass festival. She enjoyed a good game of rummy and her pets.
Irean is survived by her children; Florence Milk of Greene, Calvin Thurston and his wife Carol of Tyner and Paul Thurston and his wife Becky of McDonough, 11 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 19 great great grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Besides her husband Frederick, Irean was predeceased by her sisters Helen Spencer, Althea Bush, Lina Fleming and Leva Cowan, her bothers Clarence and Edward Hatton and her son-in-law Jim Milk.
She will certainly be missed by everyone who knew her affectionately as “grandma.”
Funeral services for Irean were held today, Monday, Feb. 13, at 1 p.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. Interment followed in the Maplewood Cemetery of Mt. Upton.
