Catherine Hughes


OXFORD – Catherine Hughes, 79, former Oxford resident, passed away Dec. 7, 2006 at Cold Springs Hills Nursing Home, Syosset.
The daughter of William and Catherine Sprezel was born in Brooklyn on March 11, 1927. In 1994 she moved to Oxford to live with her daughter Catherine and family. She worked for the U.S. government  during World War II and later for the Manhattan Bank. Married Edward Hughes in June of 1947. A life long Democrat, she spent many hours volunteering for the Democratic Party. In August of 2006, she returned to  Long Island for continuing treatment for cancer.
Catherine is survived by her daughter and son in-law, Catherine and Edward Ulfik; son Edward Hughes of Florida; her son Richard Hughes and his wife Regina of Long Island; and Chris Hughes and his wife Alison also of Long Island. Her grandchildren Edward and Elizabeth Ulfik, Kristy Scarabino and her husband James, Michelle, Melissa and Richard Hughes, Christopher and Alyssa Hughes. Her great-grandchildren James, Anthony and Joseph Scarabino.  Her sister and bother-in-law Loretta and Bruce Anketell, sister Helen Link, brother-in-law Patrick Nokety, and bother-in-law Edward Lanctot. along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Calling hours were held at the Lindenhurst Funeral Home and a Mass of Resurrection for Catherine was held at Our Lady of Perpetual Hope Lindenhurst.
